Case Studies

Book Creator is an amazing app.  It can be used for so many things for all grade levels.  One of the Case Studies used Book Creator to focus on a Grade Primary reading.  The student had pictures of their monthly reading and site words.  Th student read the stories and recorded their own voice.  Students enjoy this activity and it is a good feedback tool.

Writing Support
Writing process for students in Grade 2/3.  ELT support.
Cowriter, Book Creator, Clicker sentences were the main apps used for the case study.  The iPad is a tool used to motivate the students to write.  Co-writer provided immediate feedback and a chance to fix the errors when a word did not sound right.  The students were excited to have word predictions.
Hideout phonic(fun way to learn short vowels)s, Phonics genius (vowel combinations), Fun rhyming (supports spelling) these were quick 5 minutes activities they used at the end of the writing and reading activity.

The fab four of reluctant writers due to challenges in fine motor, executive function, memory retention ,word attack/spelling/phonological awareness.  Co-writer and word prediction software would be excellent for the fab four.
Co-writer increased the number of sentences, sequence, readability and motivation in the students.

How to help High School students with LD.  Well, we can use iPads but are the students using them properly?  We need to train how to use the iPad,  what do you use for your DA.
Training for the kids is very important.  What is proper etiquette?
This is a great website that talks about  iPad use.

Socrative is a smart student response system that empowers teachers to engage their classrooms through a series of educational exercises and games via smartphones, laptops, and tablets.

As you can see from the presentations their are applications and tools that are good go to resources.  Book Creator, CoWriter and of course the iPad are the most popular.  It was interesting listening to the presentations and relating the information to the articles that we read earlier in the course.  The talk of the iPad - Breaking New Ground in Special Education is so true.  The iPad allows us to use Universal Design for Learning in our teaching environment because the iPad is becoming the tool that can"customize" student's learning.  The article states there is a revolution going on in special education but I feel they were the first to figure out what a great tool the iPad can be for students and teachers.  The SSRSB is implementing the TELP program which will make UDL more of a reality in our classrooms.  "The Shift in Assistive Technology" is absolutely wonderful for those students and teacher that need the organization. I know as a teacher, that teachers in 3 different learning environments, the iPad is a tool that I use to keep organized and prepared.  The idea of TELP will take away the "negative stigmatism that is attached to students that use the tool for assistance."  Now every student will have an iPad in their hands and the Universal Design for Learning will be at the students finger tips.  Thanks for a great course!

  1. I really enjoyed your presentation, Selena! It is always so much fun and interesting seeing what other educators are doing with technology with their students, but also for themselves as well. Prezi is impressive and I plan to use this more in the near future. Christmas break is going to be such a great time to really sit and play around with all the apps we have been learning about and getting to use. Awesome and quite impressive how you are going to incorporate the ITunes U course to support your curriculum in French and Phys. ED. I really enjoyed learning from you and getting to know you. Your students are blessed to have you! Take care and all the best. Have a wonderful Holiday season! Take care.

  3. I loved how you said in your presentation that the iTunes U ensured that your students were actually completing their tasks. That's so powerful. You've obviously put UDL principles into full effect in your teaching and your enthusiasm with AT has certainly captivated your students engagement in their learning. They are very fortunate to have such a hard working, forward thinking and caring teacher like you.
